Welcome Back to School

“When educating the minds of our youth, we must not forget to educate their hearts.” --Dalai Lama

August 30, 2019

Dear PS 84 Lion Family,

As the last golden days of summer are upon us, I hope you all are finding yourselves in the midst of making happy memories with your loved ones.

The past few weeks here at PS 84 have been busy for our incredible custodial crew, office staff, and parent volunteers! Our classrooms, hallways, auditorium, gym, and cafeteria are sparkling clean and repainted. The first floor student bathrooms are now nicely renovated too!

Ms. Acosta, Mr. Acevedo, and I have been working hard as well, planning and preparing for the coming year. Knowing that it’s so important to work as a team and share ideas, resources, and planning.

This year our schedule will have more common blocks, where all grades will have at least 2 common preps every week! The vision of fostering connectivity among all students in the different programs will finally become reality, as they will take their special area classes in teams. Team names will be the four codes of living: Team Respect, Team Open-minded, Team Achieve, and Team Responsibility. ROAR!

As creating connectivity among our cluster teams is a high priority, the Specialty Teachers will be training and facilitating Restorative Circles to promote community among students from different academic programs. In addition, this year, the DOE is offering social-emotional learning (SEL) curriculum training to schools that serve grades K–5, provided by National University System’s Sanford Harmony program. Our new CSMA classroom teachers will be joining Ms. Acosta in this SEL Professional Development this fall.

We have new PS 84 family members! Please join me in welcoming Ms. Ambreen Satia - Kindergarten Class 022, Ms. Kate Hecker - First Grade CSMA, Ms. Monika Mattos - Second Grade DL French 321, Ms. Olunifie Ojediran - Third Grade CSMA, Ms. Amanda Crespo-Perez - Third Grade 322, Ms. Rori Grene - Fifth Grade CSMA, Leslie San Martin - Psychologist Intern, Ms. Grace Kenny - Recess Aide, Anastasia Ramos -Teacher Assistant, Ms. Betsy Fernandez -Teacher Assistant, and Ms. Laura Sanchez - Food Services Supervisor.

This year we received grant funding from Borough President Gale Brewer and City Councilmember Helen Rosenthal. Pre-K class 006 will finally get an in-class bathroom installed before next summer and we received monies for more technology.

I miss you all and cannot wait to see all our student Lions next week.

I hope everyone enjoys these last few days of summer. Smile, be merry, rest, and have a wonderful Labor Day weekend!

Sending kindest regards,

-Dr. Evelyn Lolis
